Light Screen
Paper Structure / Process Book

The objective of this project was to construct an abstract form from paper, while engaging in a design process in which there was no preconceived solution. Instead, the experimental process of cutting, folding and altering the paper led to more concrete ideas which were further explored and expanded upon. Through construction and observation, the concept of a modular system became more apparent, and final forms could be free-standing, hanging or wearable pieces.

I ended up using a printmaking process which involves melting down beeswax, soaking the paper in it, letting it dry, and then ironing off the wax by sandwiching the module between sheets of scrap paper. The process was rather experimental as I explored different combinations and varying levels of wax and how to apply it. By showing each stage of the process it becomes evident how greatly surface texture alters light and creates shadows. The cut-outs add to the overall layering effect.

The final piece is six squares wide and twelve squares long, and each module is a 5.5" square. I decided on these dimensions so that the piece equalled two squares stacked on top of each other.Since the modular system is so much about light and shadow, I felt it would best be displayed as a window screen. As the light shifts throughout the day, the piece appears to change as well. It casts a variety of shadows and shows the papers’ fibers depending on the light exposure.
